Online Shopping Sites That Never Quite Made it (and Why)

The relatively brief history of the Internet is littered with stories of dot-com flameouts -- companies that blew through millions of dollars in Venture Capital funding before riding off into the bankruptcy sunset. Most notable of these failed companies were the online retailers who bragged about their Super Bowl ads, but generated little sales from their monumental branding campaigns. Here's a few selections from the hall of shame.

Pets.com

One of the trademark stories from the crash of the first Internet bubble, Pets.com looked like a sure thing. Plenty of cash, a Super Bowl and an unforgettable sock-puppet mascot all placed this pet food delivery service into the minds of millions of Americans. The problem was, nobody stopped to think about whether or not the business model was sound. Turns out, it wasn't, as people didn't really want to wait for the pet food and supplies to arrive via UPS. The company went under after only a year and a half in business.

Webvan.com

In 1999, Webvan.com was the darling of the Internet world. The online grocer raised almost 400 million dollars in less than six months and looked to be on its way to Internet success. But a funny thing happened along the way -- people just didn't warm up to the idea of shopping for grocery essentials online. The grocery business has very thin margins to begin with, so every time Webvan used a special offer to entice customers, it fell that much deeper into debt. The company closed with little fanfare in 2001.

eToys.com

Although eToys.com was eventually reborn after being purchased by KayBee Toys, the first iteration of the site experienced one of the most spectacular flame-outs in web history. Simply put, the company used the bulk of its $150 million is start-up capital to advertise and build the brand. When the customers didn't come, the stock price sank to nine cents a share. Closure soon followed.

MVP.com

How could a sporting goods and apparel site backed by athletic luminaries such as John Elway, Michael Jordan and Wayne Gretzky fail? Easy, if you don't have any significant sales growth and can't pay back your loan/investment from partner CBS. Despite a ton of initial PR and almost a $100 million in VC capital, MVP.com closed up shop for good after a single year in business.

Boo.com

The women's clothing company Boo.com was ahead of its time...but not in a good way. The site used Flash and JavaScript heavily at a time when very few people had high-speed Internet connections. As a result, shoppers became frustrated and turn away from the site in droves. Boo.com posted a loss of $160 million dollars before it was liquidated in 2000.

Why Online Shopping Gets in Right in 2009

The Web 2.0 era has been the scene of more online retailer success stories because now, innovative thinking and real customer growth has replaced "pie in the sky" big ideas that generate no money. Auction houses, overstock companies and deal of the day websites are enjoying success in 2009 because they are smart business models that go easy on the "bells and whistles" and instead deliver no-frills discount shopping to an army of consumers. The web has come a long way since these dot-com-busts, and as such, online shoppers are now treated to more secure websites with better selections and more incredible savings.

Knowing what to feed your baby in the early stages is a little easier because she will be on liquid diet of breast milk or formula (preferably breast milk when possible). But what happens when it's time to start introducing soft solid foods? Your pediatrician will help guide you on when to start introducing solids but generally the main diet for babies up to six months should be breast milk or formula.

When you start introducing solid foods it should be foods like soft cereals -- rice, barley or oat -- and pureed or mashed fruits and vegetables. Watch baby to make sure there isn't a reaction to the new foods and note anything you notice. Fruits that are good starters include bananas, applesauce, avocado, peaches, mango and plum to name a few. Vegetables that are good starters include sweet potato, pumpkin, carrots and peas to name a few. The fruit should be mashed and pureed and the vegetables should all be cooked, mashed and pureed.

Many are finding that homemade baby food is cheaper and many feel healthier than commercial baby food. Homemade baby food is fresher and you have complete control of the ingredients so you know exactly what's in the food; there aren't any fillers just nutritious food.

Don't panic, making baby food isn't that difficult. Choose the foods you want to make, cook those foods until they are somewhat soft, let them cool, then put them in food processor or blender and puree. You can also use an immersion blender to puree the foods to make it that much easier. You can use water, breast milk or formula to mix the puree if needed.

Baby feeding with homemade foods can be a lot of fun as you create combinations and start learning your baby's likes and dislikes. It also feels better feeding your baby something you made instead of something that came in a jar. It's easy to freeze and store so you can have food on hand and ready at any time.

Baby feeding is an important part of your baby's first years. After all baby is quickly growing and developing, needing nutrient rich foods to help the little system become it's best. You don't want to feed empty calories. Everything baby eats should have nutritional value.

Educational Wooden Toys

Educational wooden toys add fun to learning. Unlike battery-operated toys that move on their own, educational wooden toys encourage a child to think and come up with creative ideas for play. Puzzles are extremely useful for children of all age groups. Toddlers can be given puzzles with a small number of pieces. Observing them, it is amazing to see how, with every use, they do something different until they master the puzzle. At first, their actions are random, but after a few uses they rotate pieces and try to fit them in correctly. Eventually they master the puzzle and are ready for the next one. Solving a puzzle is a constructive learning experience for children. Parents should make sure that puzzles are appropriate for the child’s age. While large recognizable pieces are needed for young children, smaller piece puzzles are more challenging as they grow older.

Wooden educational toys come in many types ranging from musical to mathematical toys. Some of them help children learn the names of different colors while others help them learn the names of animals and birds. There are also toys to help preschoolers learn the basic alphabet and numbers.

They help a child develop creativity and enhance certain inherent abilities. This can prove to be extremely beneficial in later life. Musical toys such as basic wooden drums or a small wooden string instrument can even help children develop musical abilities. They not only encourage a sense of rhythm and chords in a child but also expose him to a varied range of sounds. Development of auditory skills happens automatically when a child plays with musical toys.

Puzzles and construction sets ensure the growth of a child’s logical thinking and problem solving ability. Their natural curiosity is channeled positively. This way of learning is non-tiring and actually enjoyable for the child. Memory skills and mathematical skills are nurtured in a fun way by using these types of toys.

Because these toys are made out of wood, this gives them the durability to last through the rigors of a rough and tumble childhood. These educational wooden toys can also be used in schools and pre-schools. These toys stimulate a child’s mental capabilities, widen their imagination and enhance their sense of creativity.

Wooden Toys provides detailed information on Wooden Toys, Children's Wooden Toys, Educational Wooden Toys, Simple Wooden Toys and more. Wooden Toys is affiliated with Child Development Educations.

How to Find and Get Hot Christmas Toys
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=B._Jackson]B. Jackson

It's that time of year again and all good parents are about to go out looking for all the hot Christmas toys for their kids. It can sometimes be overwhelming. What are the hot Christmas toys? Where do I even begin to look? Thanks to the internet, the search has become a lot easier. Just go to Google and type in "hot Christmas toys." How simple is that?

Google will even give you list of suggestions as you type. One of the choices that pops up will be hot Christmas toys 2009. Click it! Now you will be taken to a list of web pages showing you just about every toy that is selling well or expected to sell well. Now your saying, "Great information! You just showed me how to do a search on Google. Like I haven't already done that a million times. I don't need to know how to do that."

Bear with me.

First go to another lesser know Google site called Google Trends. It's [http://www.google.com/trends]http://www.google.com/trends. Now type in "hot Christmas toys." You will be presented with a graph that shows Google's search volume for those key words. Notice that search for hot Christmas toys spikes at the end of every year. This means the search volume for those words are really increasing.

Notice the spikes each year are very similar. There are hardly any searches for hot Christmas toys until around August then the search drastically starts to rise and peaks around the end of November. After November the search drastically plummets until there is no more searching right at the end of December. My guess would be around December 25.

So what are your chances of getting a hot Christmas toy? That depends on where you are on the graph. If the graph is just starting to rise then you are in good shape. If the graph looks like it is about at its peak (compare it to the last years graph) then you chances are slim to none.

Now try the same thing with an actual item. For example last year Spike the Dinosaur was a really hot Christmas toy. If you do a search on Google trends for Spike the Dinosaur you will notice last year it spiked really high and if you look at this year it looks like it is starting to spike again.

At the time of this writing Spike's spike is just beginning. So if you are looking for Spike the Dinosaur, now is the time to buy before they run out, before the spike gets bigger. Try this in your search. If you see a spike starting it is probably going to be a hot item. How high the spike is currently growing will show you the demand.
